You learned how to study in school.
Going to school helped you get a job.
You got professional training for your job so you could do it well.
Quite likely, you had instruction as to how to swim, to speak another language, to play music, to drive a car, to cook a meal.
But rare is the soul taught to parent.
We are left to ourselves to figure out how to discipline, set healthy routines, make food choices, keep house, help with homework, guide through adolescence and into sexuality and their own decisions ... all while balancing our own work and interests and relationships.
As a result of being without structured guidance, we tend to fall back on how we were raised. Or we rebel against how we were raised and try our hardest to break new ground, but usually return somehow to the patterns we came from. Both of these are perpetuations of the past. We plan to do it our own way. We have the best of intentions. But we also get busy, tired, hurried, uncertain, influenced by best friends and families all making their own choices.
What's a parent to do?
In yoga, we break the "chakra samskara" - the wheel of our patterns. We slow and notice our breath. We pause to let our thoughts subside. We move and activate to inspire ourselves to the choices that take effort and result in light.
See the patterns you have made, see the history you come from, and articulate the parenting you want.
I will guide you.
It won't take long.
But it will make all the difference.
You deserve guidance.
Your children deserve the best you have to offer.
You have both chosen each other and this is the time to learn the lessons and gather close into the love that lies between you.
There will be a community to learn with.
And tools for understanding your expectations of parenting that were there long before you were a parent.
You will name your triggers, what knocks you off center, and how to build a fertile, neutral state.
You will make more of what you truly long for in your relationships far beyond within your family.
We will redefine 'Mother' and 'Father' as verbs and how we all need the skills of both, and how to receive both forms of care ourselves.
We will use simple sutras from the texts of the yogis as our compass points each week. You will learn tips and tools that will help you to continue to adapt and refine as your family evolves.
There will be movement, meditation, writing, lecture, and discussion.
You may come alone. You may come as couples. You may come if you don't have children. You may come on behalf of a parent you love and record it all to take back to them. We are all parented. We all parent those we love. Learn how to do it well and bring out all your light.
